Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan

What is Kundalini Yoga - as taught by Yogi Bhajan ?

Kundalini yoga is the yoga of Awareness.  Kundalini yoga was brought to the west by Yogi Bhajan in the late 1960’s.  It is a form of yoga that focuses on breath work (pranayama), postures (apana) and mantras.

“Kundalini yoga classes are a dynamic blend of postures, pranayam, mantra, music and meditation, which teach you the art of relaxation, self-healing and elevation. Balancing body and mind enables you to experience the clarity and beauty of your soul. No previous experience in yoga is required for you to achieve results with your very first class.”

Yogi Bhajan

At the start of each class we tune in with a mantra. After a set of warm up movements, the class starts with a kriya (set of postures).   These kriyas were taught by Yogi Bhajan to achieve specific outcomes - hence one often hears about the ‘technology’ of kundalini yoga.

There are hundred’s of different kriyas - which is the reason that just about every class is different.  There are kriyas to increase spinal flexibility, to improve memory, fight depression, work on the endocrine system, your chakras, your energy body....  Some are more physically challenging, others mentally challenging, and some that feel more relaxing.

In every class there is a period of relaxation - of lying down and allowing the ‘juices’ that were released during the class to permeate through the body - for the effect of the kriya to take hold in your body, mind and soul.

The class ends with a meditation.  Again Yogi Bhajan taught many different types of meditation with different purposes in mind.  Some include mantra (chanting), mudras (certain hand positions) and various types of breathe work.  All are deeply relaxing.

Yogi Bhajan suggested that all classes close with the blessing -

May the long time sun shine upon you

All light surround you

And the pure light within you

Guide your way on

Sat Nam

Movement into Meditation Evening Classes

Inspired by the music of Kundalini Yoga the first of these classes will be held on Wednesday 31 January 2018 7.15 - 8.30.

Starting with the gentle Relaxation Movement Series Kriya we ease our bodies to release the stress of the day with gentle rhythmic dance - moving our bodies to beautiful sounds of Kundalini Yoga mantras.

"Rhythmic, unforced, graceful, and free movement relaxes the entire body and releases the tensions we store in the body from our daily emotions. All emotional traumas leave their signature of tension in the body, which need to be released. Feeling the entire body confirms the reality of the relaxation and smoothes the aura."

We then move into a Kundalini Yoga (as taught by Yogi Bhajan) meditation and complete the class in silence. The meditation will celebrate that the 31 January is full moon and a lunar eclipse.

What to wear

Loose comfortable clothing - if you have white natural fabric.  The colour white expands the aura by 18 inches, protects from negative projections, deflects negativity, helps lift depression/uplift mood, and teaches one to be more graceful in one’s environment by heightening awareness of one’s surrounding. And, says Yogi Bhajan, “All the colours are in the white light. You can absorb from the white light just the frequencies you need regardless of who you are because all the frequencies are in it.”  It is recommended to wear white while practicing Kundalini to achieve better results, but it is not required.

You may chose to cover the head with a non-static, natural cloth (like cotton or silk) and with the hair up is recommended. The idea is to move the energy upwards and keep it in the body rather than allowing it to leave through the head, or crown center.

What to bring

There yoga mats in the studio but you are welcome to bring along your own.
